J.T. (Tom), a self-taught woodturner, uses local "rescued" hardwoods--deadfall/storm damaged, and woodpile pickings--to create his unique pieces. His works, some as large as 20" in diameter and retaining the natural bark rim, are turned from a single piece of wood--elm,cherry, oak, osage, apple, pear, walnut, ash, and maple. The resulting pieces feature astonishing grain and figure. His functional pieces include plates/platters, boxes, salt & pepper sets, pepper mills, bud vases, oil candles, ikebanas (Japanese-inspired flower arrangers), bowl sets and the occasional lamp.
Tom's awards have included Best of Show at New Albany, Findlay, Delaware, Westerville and Oberlin arts fesitvals.
Revealing Treasures inside Trees
(wood turner)

Starting with a rough cut section of spaulted maple, J.T. guides viewers through the steps he takes in revealing Nature's hidden treasures. J.T. first turns a log into a rough bowl discovering a nail embedded in the "blank." Viewers then pick up the process several months later after the rough bowl has dried. J.T. goes through the finishing process of turning, sanding, and sealing. 56 min. $25.00 US
