Alan is an associate professor of art at The Ohio State University. He earned his BA and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Alan has received grants from The Greater Columbus Arts Council for a Dresden Residency, The Ohio Arts Council, and the NEA. Alan describes his paintings as "record[s] of deliberate acts. They are tracings of what has been made, unmade, remade, and present a topography that hovers between the threshold of meaning and the destruction of meaning." Recent one-person exhibits include: Zak's Gallery, Chicago; Gallery WIJK, Gronningen, Holland; Barth Gallery, Columbus;and Fur Bildende Kunste, Dresden. Recent group exhibits include: Color, Ohio Wesleyan University Gallery and Ohio Artists At Roosevelt House, US Ambassador's Residence, New Dehli, India.

Deliberate Spontaneity (paint) Alan takes viewers into his studio to demonstrate and talk about his "deliberately spontaneous" approach to abstract painting.
